Battery storage systems

current power ess

Current Power builds manufactures energy storage systems (ESS) for high power applications such as renewable energy storage, marine propulsion, oil & gas, and other industries.

The Current Power ESS uses Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries. These batteries are inherently safer than the Lithium Ion batteries with Cobalt Oxide cathodes that are used in most energy storage applications. Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries are highly resistant to thermal runaway, flammability, and release of explosive gasses.

Main components

  • Battery racks
  • Battery monitoring units
  • Power converter for controlled charging & discharging
  • High frequency filter to meet power quality requirements
  • PLC based energy management system (EMS)
  • Climate controlled electrical building

Ratings

AC voltage              480–4160V

Energy.                    300-3000 kW-Hr

Peak Power.          900kW-9MW

Control and monitoring

The battery monitoring units monitor the voltage on every cell. The PLC uses this to detect problems at a cell level and optimize charging/discharging of the batteries. Long battery lifetimes are achieved by keeping every cell within its limits for voltage, current, and temperature.

The EMS is customized for the specific application.

Examples include:

  • Optimizing energy storage, based on demand, time, or other variables
  • Peak shaving
  • Power management system to automatically start & stop generators
  • Reactive power compensation
